Bag-in-box packaging is considered the best for extra virgin olive oil because it helps preserve its quality and flavour for longer. Bag-in-Box preserves the quality and extends the shelf life of olive oil. It protects the olive oil from exposure to air and from contact with oxygen when opened. It is striking that the advantages of Bag-in-Box are the weight, size and environmental friendliness.
Why:
Airtight
The inner bladder in a bag-in-box package collapses as the oil is used, which keeps air out. The tap also reduces the amount of air the oil comes into contact with
Insulated
The outer box of a bag-in-box acts as an air chamber, insulating the oil from outside temperatures.
Retains quality
Studies have shown that EVOO in bag-in-box containers retains its quality longer than EVOO in other types of packaging. For example, in one study, EVOO in bag-in-box containers maintained its quality for 120 days at room temperature, while EVOO in stainless steel containers only maintained its quality for 80 days.
Space-saving
The rectangular shape of bag-in-box containers makes them take up a bit less space for storage.
Bag-in-box packaging consists of:
- A strong plastic bag
- A box, usually made of corrugated cardboard, slightly smaller than the tin
- An airtight dispenser or faucet with a one-way valve
